Portland-based creative technology and production studio dotdotdash has installed a permanent LED sculpture in the atrium of the Nines Hotel in Portland, OR. The installation, titled Bird Song, consists of eleven 35 foot-long glass-blown sculptural strands modeled after a sonogram of a repeated bird song by artist Melody Owen. “The sculpture’s form and function was holistically approached to enable a strong dialogue between its physical, visual, and sonic elements,” says Kyle Banuelos, dotdotdash founder and CEO. The entire sculpture contains over 13,000 individual LEDs engineered, designed, and programmed by the studio using its proprietary LED control software. Aside from LEDs, the 8th floor installation features soundscapes incorporating Pacific Northwest bird chirps that trigger cascading light animations. Through a custom iPad application, the Nines Hotel has the ability to change color, chirp frequency, and volume.
